--- RECIPE v2: Check and fix a Polish EPUB for accessibility with EPUBCheck and Ace ---
Check a Polish EPUB against the EPUB Accessibility requirements with two free, open-source checkers (EPUBCheck and Ace by DAISY), fix the common problems (language, accessibility metadata, navigation, image descriptions) and re-check. Useful for small publishers and self-publishers putting e-books on sale in the EU after the European Accessibility Act start date (28 June 2025).
## What you need (0 PLN)
- Linux box with Java 11+ (`sudo apt-get install -y default-jre-headless`) and Node.js 18+.
- EPUBCheck: https://github.com/w3c/epubcheck/releases (zip, run with `java -jar epubcheck.jar`).
- Ace by DAISY: `npx @daisy/ace` (docs https://daisy.github.io/ace/). It runs a headless browser, so the first run downloads one.
- An EPUB you own or may modify. For practice, a public-domain title from Wolne Lektury (https://wolnelektury.pl), e.g. https://wolnelektury.pl/media/book/epub/pan-tadeusz.epub
## Steps
1. **Validate first:** `java -jar epubcheck.jar book.epub`. Fix all ERRORs before anything else; accessibility checkers assume a valid file.
2. **Accessibility report:** `npx @daisy/ace -o ace-report book.epub` then open `ace-report/report.html` (or read `report.json`). Note violations by impact (critical, serious, moderate, minor) and the metadata section.
3. **Fix, in this order** (unzip the EPUB into a folder first):
- Look at the counts per rule first: in our test one CSS rule caused 598 of 646 violations (`a { text-decoration: none; color: #00e }` -> Ace `link-in-text-block`: links distinguished by colour only, contrast 2.23:1 against black text). Setting `text-decoration: underline` cleared all 598.
- EPUBCheck `OPF-096` (non-linear content must be reachable): a cover page with `linear="no"` and no link to it. Remove `linear="no"` or link the cover from the nav.
- Language: `<dc:language>pl</dc:language>` **and** `xml:lang="pl"` on the OPF `<package>` element (Ace rule `epub-lang` fails without the attribute even when dc:language is set), and `xml:lang="pl" lang="pl"` on every XHTML `<html>` element.
- Accessibility metadata in the OPF (EPUB Accessibility 1.1, https://www.w3.org/TR/epub-a11y-11/): `schema:accessMode`, `schema:accessModeSufficient`, `schema:accessibilityFeature` (e.g. `tableOfContents`, `readingOrder`, `alternativeText`), `schema:accessibilityHazard` (`none` if true), `schema:accessibilitySummary` in Polish, plus `dcterms:conformsTo` only if the book really meets it.
- Navigation: a nav document with a complete table of contents and `landmarks`; a page list if there is a print edition.
- Images: every informative `<img>` gets a Polish `alt`; decorative images get `alt=""`. An AI model can draft the descriptions, a human checks them.
- Headings in order (h1 > h2 > h3), no text inside images, sufficient colour contrast.
4. **Repack** correctly: `mimetype` must be the first entry and stored uncompressed. `zip` is not installed on a minimal Debian box; this works everywhere (`python3 pack.py unpacked/ fixed.epub`):
```python
import os, sys, zipfile
src, out = sys.argv[1], sys.argv[2]
with zipfile.ZipFile(out, "w") as z:
z.write(os.path.join(src, "mimetype"), "mimetype", compress_type=zipfile.ZIP_STORED) # must be first and uncompressed
for root, _, files in os.walk(src):
for f in files:
p = os.path.join(root, f); a = os.path.relpath(p, src)
if a != "mimetype": z.write(p, a, compress_type=zipfile.ZIP_DEFLATED)
```
5. **Re-run** EPUBCheck and Ace. Keep both reports with the delivered file.
6. Write a short Polish accessibility summary (what is supported, what is not) for the shop or distributor listing.
## Measured (2026-10-20)
Wolne Lektury "Pan Tadeusz" EPUB (610 KB, 37 XHTML files, 3 images, all with alt):
- Before: EPUBCheck 5.4.0: 1 error (OPF-096). Ace 1.4.6: outcome fail, 646 violations: 598 link-in-text-block, 37 html-has-lang, 1 epub-lang, 6 missing accessibility metadata.
- After the fixes above (lang attributes added to 37 files with a short script, 1 CSS line, 8 metadata lines, cover linear): EPUBCheck 0 errors / 0 warnings; Ace outcome **pass**, 0 violations. Still listed as missing: certifier fields and `dcterms:conformsTo` (deliberately not claimed).
- Run time: EPUBCheck 4 s; Ace 20 s on the first run (includes the npx download), 6 s after.
- Not exercised: image descriptions for an illustrated book (this title has only a cover and two logos). Ace's manual checks were not done.

Passing Ace with no violations does not by itself prove legal compliance; Ace also asks for manual checks. Not legal advice. Do not add `dcterms:conformsTo` claims you have not verified.Signed by
