> Status: tested once (2026-10-24, ~14:30 Warsaw) on Linux (Debian) with Node 20.19.2, plus Node 18.20.8 and 20.18.0 for the ESM checks. Packages: `@modelcontextprotocol/sdk` 1.32.2 (v1, current `latest`), the v2 split packages `@modelcontextprotocol/server` / `@modelcontextprotocol/client` 2.4.0, TypeScript 7.0.2 and 5.9.3, zod 4.6.7. Each case was compiled, then run as a stdio server from an SDK client that called `tools/list` + `tools/call`. Bundlers (esbuild, webpack, Vite), tsx/ts-node, Bun, Deno, Windows, macOS and host apps were NOT tested.
Every error string below was copied from a real run on 2026-10-24.
## Symptom
Your TypeScript/Node MCP server will not start. The client (Claude Desktop, Cursor, Claude Code, Inspector) only reports `MCP error -32000: Connection closed`. The server's stderr shows one of these:
- `Error [ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND]: Cannot find module '.../node_modules/@modelcontextprotocol/sdk/dist/esm/server/mcp' imported from .../dist/index.js`
- `Error: Cannot find module '.../node_modules/@modelcontextprotocol/sdk/dist/cjs/server/mcp'` (CommonJS build)
- `Error [ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND]: Cannot find module '.../@modelcontextprotocol/sdk/dist/esm/index.js'`
- `Error [ERR_PACKAGE_PATH_NOT_EXPORTED]: Package subpath './mcp.js' is not defined by "exports" in .../@modelcontextprotocol/server/package.json`
- `Error [ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND]: Cannot find package '@modelcontextprotocol/server'` (or `'@modelcontextprotocol/sdk'`)
- `SyntaxError: The requested module '@modelcontextprotocol/sdk/server' does not provide an export named 'McpServer'`
- `Error [ERR_REQUIRE_ESM]: require() of ES Module ...` or `SyntaxError: Cannot use import statement outside a module`
- `tsc`: `error TS2307: Cannot find module '@modelcontextprotocol/...' or its corresponding type declarations`, or (TypeScript 7) `error TS5108: Option 'moduleResolution=node10' has been removed`
## Why it happens (tested)
**There are now two SDK generations with different import paths.** Tutorials mix them:
| | v1: `@modelcontextprotocol/sdk` 1.32.2 | v2: `@modelcontextprotocol/server` 2.4.0 |
|---|---|---|
| McpServer | `@modelcontextprotocol/sdk/server/mcp.js` | `@modelcontextprotocol/server` |
| stdio transport | `@modelcontextprotocol/sdk/server/stdio.js` | `@modelcontextprotocol/server/stdio` |
| Client | `@modelcontextprotocol/sdk/client/index.js` (+ `client/stdio.js`) | `@modelcontextprotocol/client` (+ `/stdio`) |
| deep paths | any `dist/esm/<path>` file via a `./*` export, **`.js` required** | only `.`, `./stdio`, `./validators/*`, `./ext/skills*`; everything else is ERR_PACKAGE_PATH_NOT_EXPORTED |
| Node | `>=18` | `>=20` (engines) |
What failed, and why:
1. **v1 import without `.js`** (`.../server/mcp`). The v1 `./*` export maps the path straight to `dist/esm/server/mcp` (or `dist/cjs/...` for require). That file doesn't exist, so you get `ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND` / `MODULE_NOT_FOUND`. **The trap: `tsc` compiles this without any error** (tested on TS 7.0.2 and 5.9.3 with `nodenext` and `bundler`; on TS 5.9 with `commonjs`/`node10` too), because the type mapping `./dist/esm/*.d.ts` finds `mcp.d.ts`. You only find out at runtime.
2. **v1 root import** `import { McpServer } from "@modelcontextprotocol/sdk"`. There is no `dist/esm/index.js`: you get TS2307 at compile time and `ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND` at runtime.
3. **`@modelcontextprotocol/sdk/server`** exists, but it exports the low-level `Server` only, not `McpServer`, so you get `does not provide an export named 'McpServer'`.
4. **v1 paths on the v2 package** (`@modelcontextprotocol/server/mcp.js`, `/stdio.js`, `/types.js`, `/dist/index.mjs`) give `ERR_PACKAGE_PATH_NOT_EXPORTED` for both import and require, and TS2307 in tsc.
5. **v2 code with only v1 installed (or the reverse)** gives `Cannot find package '@modelcontextprotocol/server'` / `'@modelcontextprotocol/sdk'`.
6. **v2 has no `StdioServerTransport` in its root**, so you get `does not provide an export named 'StdioServerTransport'`. Import it from `@modelcontextprotocol/server/stdio`.
7. **tsc emits JavaScript even when it reports TS2307** (the default is `noEmitOnError: false`). The broken `dist/index.js` is written anyway, and the host runs it and gets `-32000 Connection closed`.
8. **ERR_REQUIRE_ESM does NOT come from the SDK itself.** Both generations ship CommonJS builds. Every v1 server/client subpath and every v2 entry point loaded with `require()` on Node 18.20.8, 20.18.0 and 20.19.2. It comes from *another* ESM-only dependency you `require()`:
- On Node 18.20.8 and 20.18.0, `require()` of a `"type":"module"` package failed with `ERR_REQUIRE_ESM`. On 20.19.2 it worked (require(esm) is on by default).
- With `"module": "commonjs"` in tsconfig, TypeScript rewrites `await import("pkg")` into `require("pkg")`. That gave `ERR_REQUIRE_ESM` on Node 20.18.0. With `"module": "nodenext"`, `import()` is kept and worked on both.
- A package whose `exports` has only an `import` condition failed under `require()` with `ERR_PACKAGE_PATH_NOT_EXPORTED: No "exports" main defined`, even on Node 20.19.2.
9. **`import` syntax in a `.js` file without `"type": "module"`** gives `SyntaxError: Cannot use import statement outside a module`.
10. **TypeScript 7** rejects `"moduleResolution": "node"` / `"node10"` with TS5108. On TS 5.9 the v1 `typesVersions` map still made `node10` work.
## Steps
1. **See which SDK you actually have:** `npm ls @modelcontextprotocol/sdk @modelcontextprotocol/server @modelcontextprotocol/client`. Use one generation's import paths consistently.
2. **v1 (`@modelcontextprotocol/sdk`): always write the `.js` suffix on subpaths.** Tested working as ESM (TS `nodenext` and `bundler`) and as CommonJS (`require`, TS `commonjs`/`node16`/`nodenext` with `"type":"commonjs"`):
```ts
import { McpServer } from "@modelcontextprotocol/sdk/server/mcp.js";
import { StdioServerTransport } from "@modelcontextprotocol/sdk/server/stdio.js";
```
Don't import from the package root or `dist/...`.
3. **v2 (`@modelcontextprotocol/server`): no deep paths, no `.js`:**
```ts
import { McpServer } from "@modelcontextprotocol/server";
import { StdioServerTransport } from "@modelcontextprotocol/server/stdio";
```
In the same run, `registerTool("add", { inputSchema: z.object({...}) }, ...)` and the v1-style raw shape `{ a: z.number(), b: z.number() }` both worked on 2.4.0, and a v1 1.32.2 client talked to the v2 server fine. Needs Node 20+.
4. **Known-good tsconfig for an ESM server** (tested on TS 7.0.2 and 5.9.3), with `"type": "module"` in package.json:
```json
{ "compilerOptions": { "target": "ES2022", "module": "nodenext", "moduleResolution": "nodenext",
"strict": true, "outDir": "dist", "skipLibCheck": true, "noEmitOnError": true, "types": ["node"] } }
```
`noEmitOnError: true` stops tsc from writing a broken `dist/` (see why 7). If you stay on CommonJS, top-level `await` is not allowed (TS1378). Wrap startup in `main().catch(...)`.
5. **ERR_REQUIRE_ESM from some other package:** upgrade to Node ≥ 20.19 (tested fixed), or switch the project to ESM (`"type":"module"` + `module: nodenext`), or load that package with a real `await import()` under `module: nodenext` (tested). Don't use `module: commonjs`, which turns `import()` into `require()`.
6. **Remove `"moduleResolution": "node"`/`"node10"`** (TS 7 errors on it). Use `nodenext`, or `bundler` if a bundler builds the server. Note that `bundler` resolution also accepted the broken no-`.js` v1 import, which then failed under plain Node.
7. **Verify outside the host first:** `node dist/index.js` should sit silently waiting on stdin, with no stack trace. Then run `npx @modelcontextprotocol/inspector node dist/index.js` (Inspector not re-tested here) or an SDK client, and check that `tools/list` returns your tools.
## Rollback
These are code and config edits only: revert the import lines, tsconfig or package.json `type` and rebuild. If you migrated v1 to v2, `npm i @modelcontextprotocol/sdk@1` and restore the v1 import paths.

```ts
import { McpServer } from "@modelcontextprotocol/sdk/server/mcp.js";
import { StdioServerTransport } from "@modelcontextprotocol/sdk/server/stdio.js";
```
Don't import from the package root or `dist/...`.
3. **v2 (`@modelcontextprotocol/server`): no deep paths, no `.js`:**
```ts
import { McpServer } from "@modelcontextprotocol/server";
import { StdioServerTransport } from "@modelcontextprotocol/server/stdio";
```
In the same run, `registerTool("add", { inputSchema: z.object({...}) }, ...)` and the v1-style raw shape `{ a: z.number(), b: z.number() }` both worked on 2.4.0, and a v1 1.32.2 client talked to the v2 server fine. Needs Node 20+.
4. **Known-good tsconfig for an ESM server** (tested on TS 7.0.2 and 5.9.3), with `"type": "module"` in package.json:
```json
{ "compilerOptions": { "target": "ES2022", "module": "nodenext", "moduleResolution": "nodenext",
"strict": true, "outDir": "dist", "skipLibCheck": true, "noEmitOnError": true, "types": ["node"] } }
```
