Fix MCP error -32602 Invalid params (Input validation error / Tool not found) · step-by-step AI agent playbook

Give it to your botConnect your botCopies a one-line instruction for your AI assistant

Short answer: To fix MCP error -32602 Invalid params (Input validation error / Tool not found): (1) copy the full error text: The part after at is the field path that failed; (2) look at what the client actually sees; (3) pick the fix for your row; (4) restart the server…

Tested with the MCP TypeScript SDK 1.32.1: the exact -32602 texts for a string-instead-of-number, a wrong field name, an out-of-range value and a misspelled tool, and the fix for each (z.coerce, .describe(), limits in the description, re-list tools).

--- RECIPE v1: Fix MCP error -32602 Invalid params (Input validation error / Tool not found) ---
Tested on 2026-10-22 with `@modelcontextprotocol/sdk` 1.32.1 (TypeScript, Node 20, stdio) and a zod tool schema. Every error text below was copied from a real run.

## What the error means
`-32602` is JSON-RPC "Invalid params". In MCP it shows up in two different situations, and the fix depends on which one you have:

| Exact text | Cause |
|---|---|
| `MCP error -32602: Input validation error: Invalid arguments for tool get_weather: Invalid input: expected number, received string at days` | The model sent `"3"` (string) for a number field |
| `... expected string, received undefined at city` | A required field is missing, very often because the model used a different name (`location` instead of `city`) |
| `... Too big: expected number to be <=7 at days` | A `.min()/.max()` limit was broken |
| `MCP error -32602: Tool get_wether not found` | The tool name is wrong (typo, renamed tool, or the client cached an old tool list) |

Good to know from the test: in SDK 1.32.1 the validation failure comes back as a normal tool result with `isError: true` (the model sees the text and can retry), not as a thrown protocol error. Extra unknown keys (`units: "c"`) were silently ignored, not rejected. Sending `arguments` as a string instead of an object gives a different error, `-32603` with `expected record, received string at params.arguments`.

## Steps
1. Copy the full error text. The part after `at` is the field path that failed.
2. Look at what the client actually sees: call `tools/list` and read `inputSchema`. With zod `{ city: z.string(), days: z.number().int().min(1).max(7) }` the SDK published `{"type":"object","properties":{"city":{"type":"string"},"days":{"type":"integer","minimum":1,"maximum":7}},"required":["city","days"]}`. If the model's arguments don't match this, the server is right and the description is the problem.
3. Pick the fix for your row:
   - **String instead of number/boolean:** accept both on the server with `z.coerce.number()` (tested: `days: "3"` then succeeded). For booleans, avoid `z.coerce.boolean()` because `"false"` coerces to `true`; use `z.enum(["true","false"])` or a preprocess.
   - **Wrong or missing field name:** add `.describe("City name, e.g. Warsaw")` to every field and say the exact argument names in the tool description. If models keep guessing one alias, accept it explicitly instead of hoping.
   - **Out of range:** put the limit in the description ("1 to 7 days") so the model knows before it calls, or clamp instead of rejecting.
   - **Tool not found:** run `tools/list` again and compare names character by character. After renaming a tool, restart the client (Claude Desktop, Cursor, Claude Code) so it drops the cached list.
4. Restart the server and client, then repeat the exact call that failed.

## Failure note → fix
**Failure:** in the test, the model-style call `{ "location": "Warsaw", "days": 3 }` failed with `expected string, received undefined at city`. The error names the field the server expected, not the one the model sent, which is easy to misread as "city is broken".
**Fix:** read the error as "the server did not receive `city`", then check what name the client sent (client logs or MCP Inspector). Rename in the description or accept the alias.
**Visible outcome:** the same call returns `isError: false` with the tool's text.

## What I did not test
