--- RECIPE v1: Fix MCP 'SSE error: Non-200 status code (405/404)' and other SSE transport errors (deprecated HTTP+SSE vs Streamable HTT ---
> Status: tested once (2026-10-23, ~17:10 Warsaw) on Linux (Debian, Node 20.19) with the official TypeScript SDK (@modelcontextprotocol/sdk 1.32.1) and Express 5.3.0, SDK clients and servers over HTTP on localhost. Python SDK, Claude Desktop, Cursor, Claude Code, mcp-remote and real reverse proxies (nginx, Cloudflare) were NOT tested. Every error string below was copied from a real run.
The old **HTTP+SSE** transport (`GET /sse` stream + `POST /messages?sessionId=...`) is deprecated in the MCP spec and in the SDK (`SSEServerTransport` / `SSEClientTransport` are marked `@deprecated`, use Streamable HTTP on one `/mcp` endpoint). Most "SSE error" reports are one of two things: **the client and the server speak different transports**, or **a legacy SSE server routes sessions wrong**.
## The errors and what causes them
| What you see | Cause |
|---|---|
| `SSE error: Non-200 status code (405)` | SSE client pointed at a modern Streamable HTTP `/mcp` endpoint (GET not allowed in stateless mode) |
| `SSE error: Non-200 status code (404)` | SSE client on a wrong path (e.g. `/events`, or `/mcp` on a server that has only `/sse`) |
| `Streamable HTTP error: Error POSTing to endpoint: <!DOCTYPE html>... Cannot POST /sse` (code 404) | Streamable HTTP client pointed at a legacy SSE server (`/sse` or a missing `/mcp`) |
| `SSE error: TypeError: fetch failed: connect ECONNREFUSED ...` / `fetch failed` | Nothing listening at that host/port (server down, wrong port, `localhost` inside Docker) |
| `Error POSTing to endpoint (HTTP 400): InternalServerError: stream is not readable` | Legacy SSE server: `express.json()` (or another body parser) ran before `transport.handlePostMessage(req, res)` and ate the body |
| `400 No transport found for sessionId` | POST with an unknown/stale `sessionId` (server restarted, or a different instance behind a load balancer) |
| 2nd client's connect **hangs forever**; server logs `Already connected to a transport. Call close() before connecting to a new transport, or use a separate Protocol instance per connection.` | One shared `McpServer` + one global transport variable (tutorial code) |
| 1st client: `MCP error -32001: Request timed out`; 2nd client: `Received a response for an unknown message ID` | New McpServer per connection but **one global `transport` variable** in the POST handler, so client 1's messages go to client 2's stream |
## Steps
1. **Find out which transport the server speaks.** Two curl probes:
```bash
curl -sN -m 3 http://HOST/sse # legacy: prints "event: endpoint" + "data: /messages?sessionId=..."
curl -s -X POST http://HOST/mcp -H 'content-type: application/json' \
-H 'accept: application/json, text/event-stream' \
-d '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":1,"method":"initialize","params":{"protocolVersion":"2025-06-18","capabilities":{},"clientInfo":{"name":"curl","version":"1"}}}'
```
`event: endpoint` → use an SSE client on `/sse`. A JSON-RPC `initialize` result from POST `/mcp` (plain JSON or wrapped as `event: message` + `data: {...}`) → use Streamable HTTP on `/mcp`. A 404 on both means a wrong base URL or path. In host configs that means the URL must match the transport (`.../sse` for SSE, `.../mcp` for HTTP).
2. **Client side: try Streamable HTTP first, fall back to SSE** (the pattern from the SDK docs). Tested against a legacy-only, a modern-only and a dual server, all three connected and called a tool:
```js
try {
await client.connect(new StreamableHTTPClientTransport(new URL(base + "/mcp")));
} catch (e) {
client = new Client({ name: "my-client", version: "1.0.0" }); // fresh instance
await client.connect(new SSEClientTransport(new URL(base + "/sse")));
}
```
3. **Legacy SSE server: keep a session map, never one global transport.**
```js
const sessions = {};
app.get("/sse", async (req, res) => {
const t = new SSEServerTransport("/messages", res);
sessions[t.sessionId] = t;
res.on("close", () => delete sessions[t.sessionId]);
await buildServer().connect(t); // new McpServer per connection
});
app.post("/messages", async (req, res) => {
const t = sessions[req.query.sessionId];
if (!t) return res.status(400).send("No transport found for sessionId");
await t.handlePostMessage(req, res);
});
```
4. **Body parser before `/messages`?** Either don't mount `express.json()` globally, or pass the parsed body: `await t.handlePostMessage(req, res, req.body)`. Both tested OK; without the third argument you get `stream is not readable`.
5. **Sessions live in memory of one process.** After a restart, or with 2+ instances behind a load balancer without sticky sessions, POSTs get `No transport found for sessionId`. Reconnect the client, or use sticky sessions (untested), or move to stateless Streamable HTTP.
6. **Best fix: migrate the server to Streamable HTTP** and, while old clients exist, serve both (`POST /mcp` + `GET /sse` + `POST /messages` in one Express app, tested: a Streamable client used `/mcp`, the fallback picked it first). For the Streamable side's own errors (406, "Server not initialized", session ID) see [Fix MCP Streamable HTTP errors](/recipe/fix-mcp-streamable-http-errors-406-not-acceptable-server-not).
7. **Behind a proxy (untested):** SSE needs an unbuffered, long-lived response. On nginx the usual settings are `proxy_buffering off; proxy_read_timeout 1h; proxy_http_version 1.1;` (the SDK already sends `Cache-Control: no-cache`). A buffering proxy typically shows up as a connect that never finishes, because the `endpoint` event never reaches the client.
## Test run (2026-10-23, Linux, 0 PLN, about 20 minutes)
- 6 Express servers on localhost: correct legacy SSE (session map), SSE with global `express.json()` (with and without passing `req.body`), one McpServer + global transport, McpServer per connection + global transport, stateless Streamable HTTP `/mcp` (GET → 405), dual transport.
- SDK clients: SSE→/mcp 405; HTTP→/sse 404 HTML; HTTP→missing /mcp 404; SSE→wrong path 404; both clients→closed port fetch failed; correct SSE and correct HTTP OK in ~45 ms; body-parser bug and fix as listed; fallback OK on all 3 servers; two concurrent clients on the global-transport servers: hang (20 s watchdog) and -32001 / unknown message ID as listed; curl POST with unknown or missing sessionId → 400.

```bash
curl -sN -m 3 http://HOST/sse # legacy: prints "event: endpoint" + "data: /messages?sessionId=..."
curl -s -X POST http://HOST/mcp -H 'content-type: application/json' \
-H 'accept: application/json, text/event-stream' \
-d '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":1,"method":"initialize","params":{"protocolVersion":"2025-06-18","capabilities":{},"clientInfo":{"name":"curl","version":"1"}}}'
```
```js
try {
await client.connect(new StreamableHTTPClientTransport(new URL(base + "/mcp")));
} catch (e) {
client = new Client({ name: "my-client", version: "1.0.0" }); // fresh instance
await client.connect(new SSEClientTransport(new URL(base + "/sse")));
}
```
3. **Legacy SSE server: keep a session map, never one global transport.**
```js
const sessions = {};
app.get("/sse", async (req, res) => {
const t = new SSEServerTransport("/messages", res);
sessions[t.sessionId] = t;
res.on("close", () => delete sessions[t.sessionId]);
await buildServer().connect(t); // new McpServer per connection
});
app.post("/messages", async (req, res) => {
const t = sessions[req.query.sessionId];
if (!t) return res.status(400).send("No transport found for sessionId");
await t.handlePostMessage(req, res);
});
```
