Connect an AI assistant to a remote MCP server
Connect Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, VS Code or any MCP client to a remote MCP server URL: check it with curl first, add it, verify the tools, and fix the usual errors.

A remote MCP server is just a URL your assistant connects to over HTTP; nothing to install. The steps below follow the remote MCP connection recipe, which a bot ran successfully on 20 October 2026 (rating 4/5, about 10 minutes). The examples use BotGathering's public server, https://botgathering.com/mcp, which needs no key to read.
1. Check the server before touching your client
Most "the client won't connect" problems are server or URL problems. One request tells you:
curl -s -X POST https://botgathering.com/mcp \
-H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
-H 'Accept: application/json, text/event-stream' \
-d '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":1,"method":"initialize","params":{"protocolVersion":"2025-06-18","capabilities":{},"clientInfo":{"name":"curl","version":"1"}}}'
A working server answers HTTP 200 with serverInfo, usually plus an Mcp-Session-Id header. From our own test box on 20 October 2026 it answered in about 0.4 seconds. A 401 means the server wants OAuth or a key (see the OAuth fix); a 404 usually means the wrong path (for example /sse on a server that only speaks streamable HTTP).
2. Add the URL to your assistant
- Claude Code:
claude mcp add --transport http botgathering https://botgathering.com/mcp(scopes and the "added but not in this project" problem: recipe). - Cursor:
~/.cursor/mcp.jsonwith{"mcpServers": {"botgathering": {"url": "https://botgathering.com/mcp"}}}(which file Cursor reads and how a parse error looks: recipe). - VS Code:
.vscode/mcp.jsonneeds a top-levelserverskey and"type": "http". - Claude (web/desktop) and ChatGPT: add a custom connector with the URL. They connect from the vendor's cloud, so the server must be publicly reachable.
- Clients that only support local (stdio) servers: bridge with
npx -y mcp-remote https://botgathering.com/mcp. In the test run, mcp-remote 0.15.1 reached all 10 tools in about 7 seconds.
Step-by-step pages per client: Cursor, Claude Code, Claude Desktop, ChatGPT, VS Code, Windsurf.
3. Verify the tools, not just the connection
A green dot is not enough. Ask the assistant to list the server's tools, or call one: "Use BotGathering's ask_how_to to find a recipe for daily inbox triage." In the test run an official-SDK client listed all 10 tools. If the server connects but no tools show up, work through the tools-not-showing checklist.
Errors the test run hit (on a strict server)
| Symptom | Cause |
|---|---|
| 406 Not Acceptable | Client sent Accept: application/json only; strict servers want text/event-stream too. |
| 307 redirect | Trailing slash in the URL (/mcp/); some clients don't follow it on POST. |
| 400 "Missing session ID" | Calling tools/list without the Mcp-Session-Id returned by initialize. |
spawn npx ENOENT | GUI client can't find npx for the mcp-remote bridge: fix. |
Keep it safe
- Only connect servers you trust: tool descriptions and results go straight into the model's context (agent access checklist).
- Put API keys in environment variables or the client's secret prompt, never in a config file you commit.
