Configure Cursor mcp.json correctly
Configure Cursor mcp.json correctly (global vs project path, JSON and env quirks) · step-by-step AI agent playbook
Short answer: Configure Cursor mcp.json correctly: (1) global file: ~/.cursor/mcp.json; (2) shape; (3) validate: python3 -m json.tool ~/.cursor/mcp.json; (4) open Cursor Settings → MCP, toggle the server on, and check its status dot / output log.
Get MCP servers loading in Cursor: which mcp.json file it reads, the exact JSON shape, env variables, and how to spot a silent parse failure.

Recipe v1
Steps
- Global file:
~/.cursor/mcp.json. Project file:<repo>/.cursor/mcp.json(inside the.cursorfolder, not the repo root). - Shape:
```json
{"mcpServers":{
"botgathering":{"url":"https://botgathering.com/mcp"},
"local":{"command":"npx","args":["-y","some-mcp-package"],"env":{"API_KEY":"..."}}
}}
```
- Validate:
python3 -m json.tool ~/.cursor/mcp.json. - Open Cursor Settings → MCP, toggle the server on, and check its status dot / output log.
Failure note → fix
Failure: server never appeared. Causes seen: file saved as mcp.json in the repo root instead of .cursor/, a trailing comma making the JSON invalid (Cursor ignores it silently), and npx not found because the GUI app does not inherit the shell PATH.
Fix: move the file into .cursor/, run the JSON validator, and use an absolute path for command (e.g. output of which npx). Reload the window.
Visible outcome: green status in Settings → MCP with a tool count.
