--- RECIPE v1: Fix 'keyValidator._parse is not a function' and empty inputSchema in TypeScript MCP servers (zod 4 vs MCP SDK versions) ---
> Status: tested once (2026-10-24, ~17:10 Warsaw) on Linux (Debian), Node 20.19.2, with the official TypeScript SDK `@modelcontextprotocol/sdk` 1.22.0, 1.23.0 and 1.32.2 (current `latest`), crossed with zod 4.6.7 (current `latest`), 3.25.76 and 3.23.8. Each combination ran a stdio server with one tool (`city: string`, `days: int 1..7`), called from an SDK 1.32.2 client: `tools/list`, then `tools/call` with valid and invalid arguments. `tsc` checked with TypeScript 5.9.3. The v2 split packages (`@modelcontextprotocol/server`), Python, bundlers, pnpm/Yarn PnP and host apps (Claude Desktop, Cursor, Claude Code) were NOT tested.
Every error string below was copied from a real run on 2026-10-24.
## Symptom
Your TypeScript MCP server starts, but tools are broken in one of these ways:
- Every call to the tool returns `isError: true` with the text **`keyValidator._parse is not a function`**, even with perfectly valid arguments.
- `tools/list` shows the tool with an **empty schema**: `{"type":"object","properties":{},"additionalProperties":false}`. The model then calls it with no arguments or made-up ones.
- The client fails right after connecting, while listing tools, with a zod error like `"path": ["tools", 0, "inputSchema", "type"], "message": "Invalid input: expected \"object\""`. The raw server reply had `"inputSchema":{"$schema":"http://json-schema.org/draft-07/schema#"}` with no `type`.
- `tsc` fails with `error TS2740: Type 'ZodString' is missing the following properties from type 'ZodType<any, any, any>': _type, _parse, _getType, _getOrReturnCtx, and 7 more.` (and handler args become implicit `any`, TS7031).
- The server dies at startup with `Error [ERR_PACKAGE_PATH_NOT_EXPORTED]: Package subpath './v4' is not defined by "exports" in .../node_modules/zod/package.json` (or `'./v3'`). The client only sees `MCP error -32000: Connection closed`.
## Why it happens (tested)
**Your zod and the SDK's zod are different major versions.** zod 4 is now the npm `latest`, so `npm i zod` installs 4.x. SDK versions **up to 1.22.0** only understand zod 3 schemas: they depend on `zod ^3.23.8`, and npm quietly installs a second, nested zod 3 inside the SDK. Your zod 4 schemas reach SDK code that calls zod 3 internals (`_parse`), which zod 4 objects don't have. **SDK 1.23.0 and later** accept both (`zod ^3.25 || ^4.0`, peer dependency).
Results of the matrix (raw shape = `inputSchema: { city: z.string(), ... }`, object = `inputSchema: z.object({...})`):
| SDK | your zod / import | raw shape | z.object |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.22.0 | 4.6.7, `from "zod"` | empty schema in tools/list, every call → `keyValidator._parse is not a function` | client throws `expected "object"` on listTools |
| 1.22.0 | 4.6.7, `from "zod/v4"` | same as above | same as above |
| 1.22.0 | 4.6.7, **`from "zod/v3"`** | **OK** | not tested |
| 1.22.0 | 3.25.76, `from "zod"` | OK | OK |
| 1.22.0 | 3.25.76, `from "zod/v4"` | empty schema + `keyValidator._parse` | client throws `expected "object"` |
| 1.23.0 | 4.6.7 | OK | OK |
| 1.32.2 | 4.6.7 (`zod`, `zod/v4`, `zod/v3`) | OK | OK |
| 1.32.2 | 3.25.76 (`zod`, `zod/v4`, `zod/v3`) | OK | OK |
| 1.32.2 | 3.23.8, `from "zod"` | OK (npm added a nested zod 4.6.7 for the SDK, no install error) | OK |
| 1.32.2 | 3.23.8, `from "zod/v4"` or `"zod/v3"` | server crash: `ERR_PACKAGE_PATH_NOT_EXPORTED` (those subpaths only exist from zod 3.25) | same |
The old `server.tool(name, description, shape, handler)` API behaves the same: broken on 1.22.0 + zod 4 (`keyValidator._parse is not a function`), OK on 1.32.2 + zod 4.
Two details that make this confusing:
- The server does **not** crash and logs nothing. The error only shows up as tool-result text, so the host just shows "the tool failed".
- With the bad combinations **any** arguments fail, valid or not. If valid arguments fail, it's a version problem, not your schema. (If only bad arguments fail with `MCP error -32602: Input validation error`, see the -32602 recipe linked below.)
## Fix
1. **Check what is installed:** `npm ls @modelcontextprotocol/sdk zod`. The broken case looked like this:
```
├─┬ @modelcontextprotocol/sdk@1.22.0
│ └── zod@3.25.76
└── zod@4.6.7
```
A different zod version nested under the SDK, with an SDK at 1.22.0 or older, is the problem.
2. **Upgrade the SDK (recommended):** `npm i @modelcontextprotocol/sdk@latest`. Tested: the same project (1.22.0 + zod 4.6.7) moved to 1.32.2 with no code changes. The full schema showed up in tools/list, valid calls returned results, and invalid ones gave a proper `-32602 ... expected number, received string at days`. `npm ls` then showed a single deduped zod 4.6.7.
3. **If you can't upgrade the SDK:** either pin zod 3 (`npm i zod@^3.25`, tested OK on 1.22.0 with `import { z } from "zod"`), or keep zod 4 installed and import the zod 3 API from it in your tool files: `import { z } from "zod/v3"` (tested OK on 1.22.0). Do **not** use `zod/v4` with an old SDK.
4. **Only use `zod/v3` / `zod/v4` subpaths with zod ≥ 3.25.** On zod 3.23.8 they crash the server at import (`ERR_PACKAGE_PATH_NOT_EXPORTED`).
5. **Verify:** call `tools/list` from an SDK client or the Inspector and check that `inputSchema.properties` lists your fields. An empty `properties: {}` means the SDK could not read your schema. Then call the tool once with valid arguments.
6. **TypeScript:** after step 2, the TS2740 errors were gone on SDK 1.32.2 + zod 4.6.7 (the only remaining error was unrelated: top-level `await` in a CommonJS project, TS1309, fixed by `"type": "module"`).
## Rollback
Version pins only: `npm i @modelcontextprotocol/sdk@<old> zod@<old>` and restore your lockfile. No code changes are needed, except reverting a `zod/v3` import if you added one.
## Not tested
SDK versions between 1.17 and 1.21 (they declare the same `zod ^3.23.8` dependency as 1.22.0, so they very likely behave like it, but this was not run), the v2 split packages `@modelcontextprotocol/server`/`client`, pnpm/Yarn PnP and monorepo hoisting, bundlers, outputSchema with mismatched zod, Python, and how each host app shows the failure.
```
├─┬ @modelcontextprotocol/sdk@1.22.0
│ └── zod@3.25.76
└── zod@4.6.7
```
