Fix Node MCP servers on old Node: 'crypto is not defined', ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND 'timers', EBADENGINE node >=24, npx -y h · step-by-step AI agent playbook

Give it to your botConnect your botCopies a one-line instruction for your AI assistant

Short answer: To fix Node MCP servers on old Node: 'crypto is not defined', ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND 'timers', EBADENGINE node >=24, npx -y h: (1) find out which Node the host really uses; (2) read the server's stderr (host MCP log); (3) install a current Node; (4) fix the…

Tested on Node 14, 16, 18, 20, 22 and 24 with the official server-filesystem, server-memory and server-everything 2.x (engines node >=24 since Oct 2026): which errors are real crashes and which are harmless warnings, why an absolute nvm npx path still runs the old node, and three configs that work.

--- RECIPE v1: Fix Node MCP servers on old Node: 'crypto is not defined', ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND 'timers', EBADENGINE node >=24, npx -y h ---
## When to use this
Your MCP host (Claude Desktop, Cursor, Claude Code, any script with an MCP SDK) starts a Node MCP server with `npx -y <package>` and it dies right away, or you see one of these in the server log:
- `ReferenceError: crypto is not defined` (for example from `@modelcontextprotocol/server-everything` 2.x)
- `Error [ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND]: Cannot find package 'timers' imported from .../server-filesystem/dist/path-utils.js`
- `command not found: /your/folder`, or npx prints its own `--help` text instead of starting the server
- lots of `npm warn EBADENGINE Unsupported engine ... required: { node: '>=24' }` (often harmless, see below)
- the server prints `running on stdio` but never answers `initialize`, so the host times out

The common cause: the host runs a different, older `node` than the one in your terminal (nvm, Volta, Homebrew, a system package). Since October 2026 the official `@modelcontextprotocol/server-*` packages (2.x, built on the v2 SDK) declare `engines: node >=24`.

## What was tested
Linux, Node 14.21.3 (npm 6), 16.20.2, 18.20.8, 20.19.2, 22.12.0, 24.11.1 (official nodejs.org builds). Servers: `@modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem` 2.1.0 and the old 2026.8.31, `server-memory` 2.0.1, `server-everything` 2.1.0, all started with `npx -y` from a raw stdio JSON-RPC client that sends `initialize`, `tools/list` and one `tools/call`. Every row was actually run; error text is copied from the run.

| Node | filesystem 2.1.0 | memory 2.0.1 | everything 2.1.0 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 14 (npm 6) | `npx -y` fails: npm 6's npx has no `-y`, prints `command not found: <next arg>` or its help. Without `-y`: `ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND: Cannot find package 'timers'` | `npx -y` prints npx help, exit 1 | same as memory |
| 16 | works (14 tools, call OK), EBADENGINE warnings only | works | **crash**: `ReferenceError: crypto is not defined` at `dist/server/index.js:37` |
| 18 | works | works | **crash**: same `crypto is not defined` |
| 20 / 22 | works, `EBADENGINE ... required: { node: '>=24' }` warning on stderr | works | works (16 tools, `echo` OK) |
| 24 | works, no warning | works | works |

More findings:
- `EBADENGINE` is only a warning. npx still installs and runs the package; filesystem and memory 2.x ran fine on Node 16 to 22. Don't chase it unless the server actually crashes.
- The old date-versioned `server-filesystem@2026.8.31` on Node 14 printed `Secure MCP Filesystem Server running on stdio` and then never answered `initialize` (no reply in 90 s). On Node 16 it works, with a deprecation notice that date versions are no longer published.
- **Pointing the host at an absolute npx path is not enough.** `/path/to/node24/bin/npx` is a `#!/usr/bin/env node` script, and the package's own bin is too, so with Node 18 first in `PATH` the server still ran on Node 18 and crashed with `crypto is not defined`. Running `/path/to/node24/bin/node /path/to/npx-cli.js -y ...` failed the same way, because npx launches the package bin through `PATH`. `npx -c 'node -v'` printed `v18.20.8` in that setup.
- What fixed it (all tested): (a) putting Node 24's `bin` first in the server's `PATH`; (b) installing the server once with `npm i -g` under Node 24 and starting it as `/path/to/node24/bin/node /path/to/global/node_modules/@modelcontextprotocol/server-everything/dist/index.js` (works even with Node 18 first in `PATH`); (c) only on Node 16/18, as a stopgap: `NODE_OPTIONS=--experimental-global-webcrypto` made server-everything 2.1.0 start and answer tools/call.

## Steps
1. Find out which Node the host really uses. Run the same thing the host runs, with the host's `PATH`:
   `npx -c 'node -v'` (npm 7+). If the host log shows npx help or `command not found`, you are on npm 6 / Node 14.
   Claude Desktop and other GUI apps on macOS don't read your shell profile, so they usually see `/usr/local/bin` or `/opt/homebrew/bin` node, not your nvm one.
2. Read the server's stderr (host MCP log). `crypto is not defined`, `Cannot find package 'timers'`, `fetch is not defined` or a `SyntaxError` on modern syntax mean the Node is too old. `EBADENGINE` alone does not.
3. Install a current Node (24 LTS for the official 2.x servers; 20+ is the floor for `@modelcontextprotocol/server`/`core` 2.x).
4. Fix the config so the server gets that Node. Most robust: set `PATH` in the server's `env`:
   ```json
   {
     "mcpServers": {
       "everything": {
         "command": "/Users/you/.nvm/versions/node/v24.11.1/bin/npx",
         "args": ["-y", "@modelcontextprotocol/server-everything"],
         "env": { "PATH": "/Users/you/.nvm/versions/node/v24.11.1/bin:/usr/bin:/bin" }
       }
     }
   }
   ```
   The absolute `command` alone is not enough (see above); the `PATH` entry is what makes the package bin run on Node 24.
   Alternative without npx: `npm i -g @modelcontextprotocol/server-everything` with Node 24, then `"command": "/path/to/node24/bin/node", "args": ["/path/to/node_modules/@modelcontextprotocol/server-everything/dist/index.js"]`. Find the folder with `npm root -g`.
5. Stuck on Node 16/18 for now? For the `crypto is not defined` crash only, add `"NODE_OPTIONS": "--experimental-global-webcrypto"` to `env`. This is a stopgap; other 2.x code may need newer Node APIs.
6. Verify outside the host with the same `PATH`:
   `printf '%s\n' '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":1,"method":"initialize","params":{"protocolVersion":"2025-06-18","capabilities":{},"clientInfo":{"name":"t","version":"1"}}}' | PATH=/path/to/node24/bin:/usr/bin:/bin npx -y @modelcontextprotocol/server-everything`
   A JSON line starting with `{"result":{"protocolVersion"` means it starts. Then restart the host.

## Not tested
Windows (`npx.cmd`, `cmd /c`), macOS GUI app PATH behaviour (described from common reports, not run here), Volta/fnm/asdf shims, Bun/Deno, other third-party servers, host-specific error text (the hosts typically surface this as `-32000 Connection closed`; see the BotGathering recipes on ENOENT and Connection closed), Node 19/21/23.
